Focus on cleaning the root

Content I found interesting:

This episode of the Lex Fridman Podcast with Jordan Peterson. I won’t say much about it, you need to hear it for yourself, I can´t make justice to the words of JP.

On this podcast I heard one of the best cases against socialism ever, I think you can’t go against it. Jordan Peterson is a genius.

The story about two guys who participated on a solo sailing race around the world. Neither of them completed the race for different reasons, one of them died and the other ended up happier than ever. It really taught me a lesson about mindset and morality, they both went crazy for being alone so much time, but what changed the outcome was their mindset and the decisions that they made along the way. This is definitely a great story and a great read.

Thoughts and realizations:

It’s not enough to make a decision, you need to break some mental chains first.

The reason you can’t stand behind new year’s promises is not because you are naturally lazy to go to the gym. The reason is way deeper than that.

You want to create a new habit or break a old one, ok, but first you need to break some unhealthy patterns of thought you have accumulated for years.

To treat the problem, you need to start by finding and killing the roots, after that, the problem solves itself. So, get to the bottom of it, understand your craving or your aversion to the habit.

Why do you continue to have that behavior? What does that behavior make you feel, what does it bring to your life? Where do you feel it, physically?. Every vice has a deep-rooted motif. You are not an alcoholic because you like to drink, you are always trying to hide something of yourself, discover what that is.

You are afraid of something deep on yourself, you are afraid of this part coming to the surface, that’s why you try to hide it at every cost. This is also true for habits you want to start.

The reason you fail the good habits is the same that makes you stick to the bad ones.

You are afraid of something, discover what that is.

A really common problem people face is not being able to be still, needing constant distractions, not being able to be by themselves. This are people who watch Netflix all day and have 6h of screentime per day. Normally, the deep-rooted problem comes from being afraid of solitude, being afraid of being alone, being averse to abandonment. They need to feel a constant presence around them, because not having a presence means everyone on your life left you behind, you are afraid of everyone leaving you.

After you understand this, you can start the work. And how do you do it? Face it. You need to force being alone, and make sure that you get in your head that everyone really left you, feel that sorrow, where does it manifest in the body? Search for it, once you find it, stay there, observe it objectively. If you watch it long enough it will be your friend not your enemy, and then you will never suffer again for being alone.

Clean the roots. Search for them and observe them until they give up. To access the roots, you need to get to the deepest part of your brain, you need to access the ‘unconscious mind’, and for that you can´t just search on the surface, you can´t search on the conscient rational mind, you need to go deep.

Your problems will start to vanish this way, your suffering will start to soften, you will feel at peace even when everyone really leaves, be sure that everyone leaves. People die, you die. Work on your feelings now and reduce your suffering when everyone around you dies.

If you don’t start

You can’t finish

Either you win or you learn.

This is my mindset now, this is why I started this newsletter.

I am permitting myself to be bad and cringe. I am permitting myself to fail so I can get better.

Start now, don’t be afraid to fail.

Fail now, so you can succeed in 5, 10, 20, 50 years.

I am writing not to be writer, but to learn how to think and how to map my ideas and meanings.

If I do this long enough, I will be able to not only to organize my thoughts but hopefully also to organize yours.
